Many times, we experience some ailments which may make us feel uncomfortable or sickly. Many of these minor ailments can even keep us indoor if not properly taken care of, and the reason why this happens is because we tend to overlook or under rate them.

For instance, some women can be kept indoors for few days especially when they start their menstruation, these women are often uncomfortable or feel sickly even few days before the commencement of the monthly period. Some of the complements of such women who always dread their monthly period include; headache, undue tiredness, inability to walk properly, lack of appetite and redness of the eye .

Women however should not see menstruation as something to fear, according to medical explanation. During the letter part of the female cycle, both female hormones, oestrogen and progesterone fall to a very low level in the blood stream. This then lead to what is called menstruation, which should be seen as normal process and nothing more than the shedding off of the uterus in preparation for the beginning of a new female cycle.


Menstruation it should be emphasised should normally continue for four or five days, and may sometimes be followed by a slight discharge which can last for several days. But any bleeding or discharge continuing for more than six or seven days should be considered abnormal and may be due to lack of hormone balance within the body.

However, just before menstruations, it has become nervous and irritable, while some women’s problem with their menstruations is that they usually suffer from depression, headaches, fullness in the breasts while some may suffer or experience swelling in the lower extremities.

According to explanation given by natural medicine doctors, this is probably due to increased hormone activity from the adrenal glands during the letter parts of the menstrual cycle, which may cause retention of sodium and water in the tissues.

The question then is: How can women who often experience this unpleasant feelings prevent or avoid such uncomfortable condition prior to their monthly period? Answering the question, a naturopath, Dr. Nurudeen Animasaun explained that there simple natural preventive methods/ therapy that women can embark upon to prevent all these feelings. He said such simple natural therapy can be called do- it- yourself natural therapy without using any medication which can only ameliorate such unpleasant experiences.

According to him, aromatherapy can relief pain and painful menstruations can be relieved by gentle massage over the abdomen with what he referred to as the anti- spasmodic oil such as majoram, lavender or chamomile.

These oils according to the naturopath, also work for serious backache and stomach cramps. Those experiencing muscular pain can also get substantial relief both by massaging the affect musnules where the pain is being felt and by putting these essential oil in water and bath with it. This is because the massage movements and hot water bath heighten the medicinal effects of the oils.

On what could cause regular painful menstruation, backache and stomach cramp, the natural medicine practitioner said severe pain before driving menstruation apart from hormonal problems may be due to some abnormality that need to be corrected. He said the painful menstruation may also be due to some endocrine imbalance which may clear up entirely following pregnancy or satisfactory marital relationship (Satisfactory Sexual Intercourse).

Abnormal position of the uterus may also lead to menstrual pain or discomfort, while certain pelvic conditions, such as endometriosis and fibroids are also sure possibilities.

Infections such as syphilis, gonorrhea, or tuberculosis, may sometimes cause pelvic pain which may be aggravated during menstruation. Also rectal conditions such as constipation can also aggravate.
